TeachScape Classroom Video Capture Tool
TeachScape is a video capture tool used in many schools as a way to capture lessons, review teaching, analyze, and then reflect on teaching. Teachers and administrators use it individually and in groups to improve teaching. With TEA Fellows, we received permission to share regional clips from classrooms, and showed them in class. By creating observation checklists related to the pedagogical themes of the class, Fellows could analyze classroom teaching and then discuss international similarities and differences in teaching. TeachScape videos were augmented with parallel short clips from the Teaching Channel, allowing Fellows to practice observing shorter teaching clips. The use of this technology allowed all Fellows to participate despite technological differences in their own teaching situations.
Two guest speakers came during the 5 weeks, one to show the actual TeachScape hardware, and one a teacher leader who demonstrated how the system is used to encourage collaborative reflection for teaching improvement.
Suggestions for use of TeachScape: Write a grant to cover cost of working through video lessons to identify clips most useful in discussing various pedagogical ideas. Also work with partner teachers to create topic-specific lesson clips.
The YouTube video below provides an overview of the technology and how it was used in one of our neighboring school districts, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
